Frank McGee was born October 9, 1929 in Quitman, Mississippi to the late Emerson and Susie (Layman) McGee. He was the youngest son of 10 children. Frank married Arnetta Estell Campbell on November 10, 1951 in Freeport Illinois. From this union, Karen McGee Portis and LaFrancine McGee Baker were born. He attended Shirley Owens High School in Quitman, MS. He later moved to Freeport, IL and lived with his sister, Christine McGee Salter. Frank received his GED and attended Highland Community College in Freeport. As a young man, Frank was employed at Roper Stove Company in Rockford, IL for 10 years, working alongside three of his brothers, Leroy, Henry, and RC. He worked construction on the building of the Illinois Tollway between Rockford & Elgin and Taylor Park School in Freeport. In addition he worked for Freeport Insurance Company, Structo Manufacturers, and the City Cab Company. Frank became an entrepreneur and started several of his own businesses including: C&C Social Club, Salesman, Frank's Taxicab Service, and a Record Shop. He also sponsored his own local radio show. Frank became a courier for State Bank of Freeport, F&S, Williams-Manny Insurance, and King Enterprise. He also assisted in helping bereaved families with transportation on the day of funerals. Frank was a member of the NAACP and Freedom of Residence (F.O.R.) Committee. He also served as Alderman of the 3rd Ward. He was an avid fan of the Freeport Pretzels Sports Teams. Frank was a long time member of First Church of God. He served for many years as Chairman of the Church Trustee Board and the Pastor's Aide Committee. Frank entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on August 6, 2018. He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Arnetta E. McGee, his parents, Emerson and Susie McGee, brothers and sisters, Leroy (Rosie), W.M., Alonzo, RC, Christine (Broomsy) Salter, Henry (Effie), Milton, Loretta (Willie,Sr.) Gage, son-in-law, Kevin L. Baker, Sr. and brother-in-law, Merle D. Norman. Frank leaves to continue his family legacy his daughters, Karen A. (Alvin Sr.) Portis and LaFrancine F. Baker, four grandchildren, Alvin (Willona) Portis Jr., LaNeosho (Michael) Bradley, Kevin Baker, and Alexander Portis, five great grandchildren, sister, Earnestine Norman, and sisters-in-law, Magnolia McGee and Earnie Mae McGee. Visitation will be on Friday, August 10, 2018 from 4:00-7:00 PM at First Church of God, 484 S. Ottawa, Freeport, IL. Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2018 at 11:00 AM at St. James C.M.E. 1001 E. Empire, Freeport, IL. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.
