Faye Sanders Hughes, Christian, wife, mother, artist, and educator, of Freeport, passed from this life, Thursday October 12, 2023 at Parkview Home, Freeport.
Faye was born on August 16,1932 in Gadsden Alabama to Elmer A. and Janie (Hill) Head. She was a 1950 Graduate of Gadsden High School, Gadsden, Alabama. She started her college education at the University of Alabama, attended Tyler Junior College in Tyler Texas, Highland Community College, Freeport, IL., Rockford College, Rockford, IL, and Northern Illinois University, Dekalb, IL. She earned her Bachelor of Science and her Masters Degree from NIU. She was an art teacher for Freeport School District #145 1973 through 1991, teaching at Carl Sandburg, and Freeport Junior and Senior High Schools. The school Year 1988-1989 she was the recipient of "Those Who Excel,” the districts excellence in Education Award.
Faye married Bobby W. Sanders in Gadsden Alabama May 6th, 1951. After Bobby served as a Medic in the Korean war, they moved to Tuscaloosa, AL where Bobby was a student at the University of Alabama earning a degree in Mechanical Engineering and Faye worked in an accounting office and took night classes. Their first son, Stephen “Todd” was born in 1960 in Tuscaloosa Alabama the year Bobby graduated. A second son, Joel Robert “Chip” was born in 1964 in Tyler Texas. They lived in Akron Ohio, Cumberland Md., and Tyler Texas where Bob worked for the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company before moving to Freeport in 1967 to work for Kelly Springfield a subsidiary of Goodyear. Faye retired from teaching in 1991, leaving her more time to do her own artwork; painting in her home studio. She had a long love of reading, drawing, painting, pottery, music, dancing, golf, and traveling. Bobby passed away February 11,1995. She married Glenn L. Hughes in September 1996. For 18 years they spent winters in South Padre Island, Texas and Lake Placid, Florida.
Faye treasured her Christian Faith and is a Member of St. Johns UCC however most recently attended Park Hills Evangelical Free Church. She was a member of the Momentum Art Guild, Park Hills golf course nine hole golf league, Freeport Art Museum, and Eagles Club.
Faye is survived by her two sons Stephen “Todd” (Patti) Sanders & Joel Robert “Chip” (Kris) Sanders. She had 6 grandchildren Lindsay Marie Sanders Edwards (Nate), Stephen “Blake” Sanders, Claire Alayne Sanders, Joseph Robert “Clayton” Sanders, Alicia Ann White and Alexander Alan White.
