Eve R. Engles

Eve R. Engles, 85, of Freeport (formerly of Lanark, IL), passed away peacefully after an extended illness on February 5, 2015 at Presence St. Joseph Center in Freeport, with her loving children at her side. Eve was born at home in Savanna, IL on April 29, 1929, the daughter of Attilio (Tony) and Uliana (Julia Mori) Vannini. She married Francis (Chick) Engles in Savanna on June 14, 1952; he died June 17, 1985. Eve was a 1947 graduate of Savanna High School, and worked for several years as a telephone operator. She and her husband, along with Jim and Doris Lindsay, purchased the Clover Farm Store in Lanark, and in 1962 they opened and operated the E & L Super Value grocery in Lanark for 19 years. She sold insurance for American Family Life for several years, and then managed Standish House Bed & Breakfast in Lanark for 5 years. Eve was a long time member of St. Wendelin's Catholic Church in Shannon, where she was an active member of the women's Altar & Rosary Society and served on the Parish Council, acting as Chairperson of the Liturgical Committee for many years. She served for several years on the Lanark Library Board and Lanark Heritage Center Board. In earlier years she and Chick enjoyed travel & camping with their family and square dancing, belonging to several area square dance clubs. In 1972, they opened their home to Peter de Borst, a foreign exchange student from the Netherlands for one year. In 2000, she traveled to Italy with her son, two sisters, niece and nephew to celebrate her Aunt Pia's 100th birthday. They visited the two Tuscan villages and childhood homes of her parents, meeting cousins and relatives for the first time. More recently, she lived with her daughter Kelly and her family for 13 years, with the loving support of her caregiver, Carol Barry. She is survived by one son, Steven (Richard Johnson) of Chicago, one daughter, Kelly (Barry) Ellinor of Freeport, two grandchildren, Blake Ellinor of Dubuque, IA and Lindsay Ellinor of DeKalb, IL; two sisters, Del (Donald) Bowden of Savanna, and Sue (Bernard) Haffey of Chillicothe, MO, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1985, one daughter, Cheryl J. Bushey on February 9, 1996, two brothers, Felix (Phil) and John, an infant brother & sister, and one half-sister. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, February 10, 2015 at 11 a m. at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, with the Rev. Michael Bolger of St. Wendelin's officiating. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home with the Rosary recited at 4pm. There will also be visitation from 10 a.m. Tuesday until the time of service at St. Thomas. Interment will be in Chapel Hill Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established. Remembrances and condolences may be shared with her family at www.burketubbs.com.
