Ernest W. Pyfer, 100 years 7 months and 26 days old, died Monday, February 6, 2012 at Freeport Rehab and Health Care Center. Boron on June 11, 1911 in Polo, IL., the son of Alfred and Elizabeth (Witterstetter) Pyfer. Mr. Pyfer worked at Micro for many years. He also enjoyed servicing lamps and chair caning. Mr. Pyfer was a former region manager for the Rockford Register Star, while he worked there he met President Hoover and Babe Ruth. He married Evelyn Kroh on April 4, 1935. She died on October 10, 1987. He married Margaret Kuhnke on May 21, 1989. Ernest served in the Navy during WWII from 1943-1946. Ernest was an avid Bear fan. Survivors include his wife Margaret of Freeport, his son, John (Donna) Pyfer of Pearl City; two grandchildren, James (Janice) Pyfer of Plantation, FL and Leanne (David) Weber of Joliet; and four great grandchildren, Izabella, Delaney, Jackson and Bryce. Preceded in death by his parents and first wife. A private family service will be held. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery in Polo. A memorial has been established for Unity Hospice.
