Elizabeth Sue Smetzler

Elizabeth Sue Smetzler, 78, of Freeport, passed away, Wednesday November 13, 2024 in her home, surrounded by her loving family. Elizabeth was born August 7, 1946, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of Lillian L. Welch. Elizabeth married Arthur L. Smetzler October 15, 1966 in Rockton, Illinois. Mr. Smetzler passed away March 3, 2016. Mrs. Smetzler worked at Don's Oasis for over 30 years. She also worked at Crestview and Stephenson Nursing Homes. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Church of God In Christ. Mrs. Smetzler put family above all else, she was especially proud of her grandkids and great-grandkids.

Surviving is her daughter, Deborah "Deb" (Willie) Kreeger of Freeport; brother, Charles Paxson of Lena; two grandchildren, Sarah (Corey) Watter and William (Kimberly) Kreeger; five great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Watter, Bentley Watter, Brynlee Watter, Stephen Kreeger, and Chloe Kreeger; also surviving are nephews, Randy Benoodt of Freeport, Ronald (Anita) Benoodt of Greenfield, Indiana, and Roger Benoodt of Galena.

Mrs. Smetzler was preceded in death by her mother, husband, and brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Mary Benoodt; and niece, Carol Benoodt.

The Smetzler family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to FHN Hospice for the tremendous care they showed to their loved one.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday November 16, 2024, at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Pastor Michael Pearson will officiate. Visitation 9:00 am until the time of service. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial has been established in Mrs. Smetzler's memory.
