Edwin (Ed) Holaday 87, of Forreston, IL died Saturday September 9, 2023, at Serenity Hospice and Home, Oregon. Ed was born Oct.7,1935 in Maryville, MO. to Dale T. Holaday & L. Mildred (Barnes)Holaday. He graduated from South Nodaway H.S., Barnard, MO. He also graduated from U.S Trade School, Kansas City, MO. In May 1957 he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in Kansas City, MO.
He was sent to Lackland AFB, San Antonio, TX for basic training. Then was sent to Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS for Air Traffic Control School. After completing ATC school, he was sent to Mather AFB, Sacramento, CA. where he worked in the control tower. He was then transferred to Lockheed Air Terminal, Burbank, CA. for a 1 yr. stint working in the tower at what is now known as Hollywood-Burbank airport. He was then sent over to Clark AFB in the Philippine Islands where he spent 18 months working in the tower & the radar approach facility.
He was then sent back to the states where he was discharged in Nov 1960 at Travis AFB, CA. He went to work for the Federal Aviation Administration in May of 1963 at the tower at Kansas City, MO. After 6 months He was sent to DuPage County Airport in West Chicago, IL. He spent a short time at Metro airport in Detroit, MI before going to Greater Rockford Airport, Rockford IL where he worked in the tower and the RAPCON until retiring in Oct. of 1990, after 31 years in ATC. He then spent several years doing lawn maintenance at senior housing in Byron, Mt. Morris, Winnebago, IL and others. He also did snow removal at Byron. Retiring again in 2000 he enjoyed traveling with his wife in their motor home, especially to South Texas. He also enjoyed collecting farm toys & attending farm toy shows with his sons. He enjoyed spending time with family. He married Doris De Vries on July 27, 1968 at Forreston Grove Church at Forreston, IL.
He is survived by his wife Doris of Forreston, daughter Eddy (Tom) Grove of Mokena, IL son Chad (Lisa) of Byron, IL, son Alan (Barbie) of Oregon, IL, and 6 grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents, son Brett and daughter-in-law Becky of Forreston, sister, Evelyn Leader of Maryville, MO, brother Veldon of Yarmouth, ME.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Saturday September 16, 2023 at Forreston Grove Church. Rev. Lyle Zumdahl will officiate. Visitation 10:00 am until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Forreston Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Serenity Hospice and Home in Mr. Holaday’s memory.
