Edward David Higgins

Edward David Higgins, 86, of Freeport, Illinois died Monday January 9, 2012, at Parkview Home in Freeport following a brief illness. Mr. Higgins was born on November 2, 1925 in Taylorville, Illinois, the son of Edward D. and Lillian (Leonard) Higgins. Mr. Higgins served in World War II from October 1943 to October 1945 with the Army Air Corp. Ed was a graduate of the University of Illinois. On October 27, 1974 he married Dorothy Higgins in Freeport. She died October 6, 2005. Mr. Higgins started his work career in the insurance business. In 1949 he started with Crum and Forster Insurance Company as a Field Trainee. Mr. Higgins served as Regional Vice President of the Western Division which covered Indiana to Colorado. He retired in 1983. He then helped his wife operate Borchers Women'™s Apparel until retiring in July of 1994. Ed enjoying traveling with his wife Dorothy, wintering in Marco Island, Florida. Ed enjoyed going out to breakfast with his buddies at Amigos. Edward'™s second home was his houseboat on the Mississippi in Savanna, Illinois. Ed did volunteer work, helping students learn to read in Mrs. Polhill'™s first grade class at Center School. Survivors include his son; Robert Edward (Denise) Higgins of Crescent Springs, Kentucky, and his daughter, Sheryl Ann (Bruce) Harlan of Allen, Texas, two nieces; Vickie Good and Jan Wrigley both of Bloomington, Ill. Also surviving is a one grandson; Nathan Harlan. He was preceded in death by parents, his beloved wife; Dorothy, one brother; Louis Higgins and one sister; Lillian Todd. Memorial Services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday January 13, 2012 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Freeport, Illinois. Rev. Mark Luepke, Pastor, will officiate . Visitation will be 5:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. Thursday January 12, 2012 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport, Illinois. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery, Freeport.
