Duane Smith, 92, of Freeport passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 18, 2023, surrounded by his loving family at Winn Prairie.
Duane was born on November 12, 1931 in Rock Island, IL. to Louis W. Smith and Lena E. (Welch) Smith. Duane received a B.S. degree in Art Education from Western Illinois University in 1953. It was there he met his future wife, Ruth Neuneker. Following graduation, he entered the Army and served as a photo mapping specialist. After being discharged from the Army, he and Ruth were married in Macomb, IL. in 1955. They moved to Iowa City, IA. where Duane received his master’s degree in 1956 from the University of Iowa.
Duane began teaching art in the Freeport School District in 1956 and became head of the art department in 1962 until retirement. Duane was passionate about his students and sharing his love of art with them. He loved his job, the friendships that were made, but most of all, the kids. It was a common occurrence for former students to recognize him and take a moment to share memories of art class.
In 1963, Duane, Ruth and their growing family moved to Cedarville where they raised their five children in their beloved big old house on Mill Street. Cedarville holds a special place in the hearts of all the Smith family.
Through the years Duane continued drawing and painting as he found time and exhibited in numerous shows, galleries and art fairs over the years. In retirement, he spent countless hours in his studio creating beautiful works of art. Many treasure their, Duane Smith, original.
He was a member, serving in numerous capacities over the years, of St. Thomas Catholic church, Freeport Lions, Stephenson County Historical Society, Cedarville Area Historical Society, Freeport Art Museum and the Illinois Art Educators Association. He was also a member of the N.E.A., I.E.A. and the Illinois Retired Teachers Association. In addition to the roles he played in these organizations, he was the go-to person in the community who wouldn’t say no when his artistic and creative talents were needed in any capacity. In all of Duane’s community activities, he truly enjoyed the interactions with countless community friends.
Duane had many interests beyond art, including history, genealogy, maps, traveling and any activity that included his extended family. Duane grew up during the Depression quite poor and lost his mother during high school. He always expressed his gratitude and good fortune to have been surrounded by some wonderful relatives, neighbors and teachers who supported him along the way. His strong, quiet faith, his sensitivity, along with the impact of these experiences certainly influenced his kind, supportive nature and heart for those traveling a tough journey. He had been told more than once that he was “kind of like Mr. Rogers”. Although humbled, he took that as a wonderful compliment.
He is survived by his wife Ruth (of 68 years) and his five children. Mark (Lavinda) of Bettendorf, IA, Brad (Rebecca) of DeKalb, IL, Matt (Francesca) of LaGrange, IL, Paula Charron (Mike) of La Crosse, WI and Martha Martin (Doug) of Verona, WI.; 10 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; brother Robert (Kathy) Smith of Albany, IL; and many in laws, nieces and nephews. Duane was proceeded in death by his parents and brother Jim.
As we say farewell to Duane Smith, let us celebrate the incredible life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind. His kind heart and gentle spirit will forever be etched in our hearts.
