Duane "Jake" Boos, 86, of Freeport, died Sunday September 3, 2017 in his home. Duane was born January 13, 1931 in Freeport, the son of Edward and Neva (Slade) Boos. He married Phyllis J. Witt October 13, 1951 in Freeport. He owned and operated Boos Plumbing until his retirement in 1997. He was a member of First Free Methodist Church. Mr. Boos was a 1949 graduate of Freeport High School where he was an outstanding athlete. He broke the 1931 quarter-mile :53.4 record with :52.8 which remained for 25 years. In 1949 he beat the fastest Wisconsin quarter-miler with a record time of :51.1. after which the University of Wisconsin college coach expressed his interest in having Duane on his track team. Duane was known as an outdoor man and avid (family) camper who loved to go fishing and hunting. He enjoyed traveling and following the Chicago Bears and Chicago Cubs. Surviving are his wife, Phyllis J. Boos of Freeport; daughter, Linda (Mark Oyler) Fitzgerald of Simi Valley, CA.; three grandchildren, Kelly (Jason) Knapp, April Gushue, and Jason (Tonya Peters) Boos; brother-in-law, Dexter (Delores) Witt; daughter-in-law, Sandy Boos (Kraft); several nieces and nephews, including nephew, Douglas Witt; also surviving is his favorite cat, Ozzie. Mr. Boos was preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Larry. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday September 13, 2017 at First Free Methodist Church. Rev. Don Jamerson will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at the church. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in his memory.
