Dorothy J. Grimes, 86, of Freeport, IL died on Tuesday, October 9, 2012 at Freeport Health Network of a stroke. Dorothy was born in Saginaw, MI on July 1, 1926, the daughter of Frederick and Belvia (Vanest) Leonard. She graduated from Gladwin High School in Gladwin, MI in 1944 and from the University of Michigan School of Nursing with a Bachelor'™s degree. She married Harvey J. Grimes on July 1, 1950 in Gladwin and then moved to suburban Philadelphia, where she worked as a nurse in Presbyterian Hospital. She also worked many years as a school nurse. Dorothy is survived by her husband Harvey of Freeport; her daughters, Deb (Joe) Blair of Winslow, Judy (Ken) Moore of Freeport, and son, Fred Grimes of Durango, CO; grandchildren Eric (Kate) Blair, Amy (Chad) Doobay, Marc (Jessie) Blair, Kevin (Becky) Moore, Megan Moore; and eight great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters; her sister, Mary Gostiaux; many nieces, nephews and several cousins. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and nephew Jon Acker. She was an active member of Faith United Methodist Church, a member of the Faith Workers Class and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of PEO and a dedicated volunteer at Mother Hubbard's Cupboard. Dorothy shared her lively spirit and optimism with her family and many friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Grimes will be held at 10:00 A.M. Monday October 15, 2012 at Faith United Methodist Church in Freeport. Visitation will be held from 5-7 Sunday at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in her memory.
