Dorothy A. Gungel, 97, died Sunday, March 13, 2022 at Ascension Living St. Joseph Village in Freeport, Illinois. She was born December 17, 1924, in Metropolitan, Michigan, daughter of Emil and Anna Johnson. She grew up on a small farm with ten brothers and sisters. On June 8, 1946, she married Melvin W. Gungel in Chicago. Dorothy was preceded in death by Melvin and one son, Jon Alan Gungel. As a young girl, Dorothy dreamed of becoming a nurse, and at age 51 she returned to school and became a Licensed Practical Nurse. She enjoyed her work as an LPN at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in LaGrange, Illinois, before moving to Freeport in 1987. Dorothy and Melvin were members of First Lutheran Church in Freeport. She was part of the quilters group and was active in the women's group (WELCA) at church, and also volunteered at the adult daycare at Ascension Living St. Joseph Village. Surviving are two sons, Glenn (Laurie) of Freeport and Richard (Linda) of Madison, Wisconsin; a daughter, Carol (David) of Hudson, Illinois; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Roger (Diane) of Lakewood, Colorado; plus many nieces and nephews. Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday April 30, 2022 at First Lutheran Church, Freeport, IL. Pastor Keith Johnson will officiate. Visitation 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Burial was held at Bronswood Cemetery, Oak Brook, IL.
