Donald R. Cihak

Donald Roe Cihak, 87, of Freeport, IL passed away Wednesday February 2, 2022 in his home. He was born January 29, 1935 in Afton, IA the son of Lawrence Edward Cihak and Velma Mae Ross. On June 14, 1958 he married Frances Siebel in Wilmette, IL. Don was a 1953 graduate of Creston High School and a 1959 graduate of Iowa State University with a degree in Veterinary Medicine with honors. He practiced veterinary medicine in Dubuque, IA from 1959-1965 followed by forty years in Washington, IL. His daughter Debbie started practicing medicine in Dubuque in the 1990s and she would frequently hear stories of her father's work in the area decades earlier. Upon retiring Don and Fran moved to Montana where they were able to achieve their dream of working on a ranch. He served on the board of directors for the Illinois State Veterinary Medical Association and the Woodford County 4-H where he found great joy in helping children. Don was very active in 4-H. His hobbies included gardening, outdoor living and animals. Don and his therapy dog Blue were very well known at FHN Memorial Hospital in Freeport. He is survived by his wife Fran of Freeport, IL; three children Debbie (Jeff Becker) Cihak of Glenwood Springs, CO, Paul (Dorine) Cihak of Leonardo, NJ and Brian (Wendy) Cihak of Murfreesboro, TN; cousin Lois Clemens of Lufkin, TX; and four grandchildren Matthew Ehrler, Katelyn Ehrler, Chloe Cihak and Christopher Cihak. Don is preceded in death by his parents; siblings Leo, Gladys and Janice; and daughter Dawn Cihak. Cremation rites have been accorded. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date in Washington, IL. The family would like to extend their gratitude to FHN Hospice and Don's caregivers Deb and Jeff for their care. A memorial has been established for CIRT (Central Illinois Riding Therapy) and Wounded Warriors Project in Don's memory.
