Donald E. Kubatzke

Donald E. Kubatzke, 86, of Freeport, passed away from complications of a stroke, Saturday, September 11, 2021, in his home surrounded by loving family. Donald was born September 12, 1934, the son of Chris and Inez (Johnson) Kubatzke Sr. Don attended Freeport High School. He owned and operated Don Kubatzke Trucking for over 30 years. He also worked as a custodian for Freeport school District for 19 years, spending many of those years at Blackhawk School. He was a 54-year member of Faith United Methodist Church; 50-year Golden Member of the Eagles Club; and proudly served his county in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. Don married Marlene Kloepping and together they had three children, Kevin (Terri) Kubatzke, Karen Wittebecker and Keith Kubatzke. On October 1, 1994, Don married Lou Schlegel and blended in three children, Jerry Jr. (Katie), Tammy, and Cindy (Ricardo Santa Cruz). His favorite things to do were riding his Harley in his earlier years; going to Las Vegas, getting coffee at McDonald's with friends. Lately, he loved going on road trips with Jerry Jr. to pick up pulling tractor parts and taking them to New York, Kentucky, Missouri, Tennessee, and a few other states. Survived by his wife, Lou; children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; brother, Bob; sisters, Linda Deets and Judi (Norm) Jansen. Don was preceded in death by parents, brothers, Jerry Sr., Chris Jr.; and sister, Phylis Lower. The family would like to thank Dr. Parks and Dr. Isawi, 4th floor Telemetry Nurses, CNA's, Jerry Jr., Katie, Becca, Tammy, and Hospice for the wonderful care they showed, Don. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday September 16, 2021, at Faith United Methodist Church. Rev. Larry Thomson will officiate. Visitation 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Wednesday September 15, 2021, also at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery.
