Donald "Don" Saxby, 91, of Freeport, Illinois peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 28, 2023 at Presence St. Vincent Nursing Home in Freeport
Don was born on August 12, 1931 in Humboldt County, low, the son of William and Zelda (Helferich). He married Sandra Sarston on November 29, 1968 in Freeport. Don served in the United States Air Force from 1950-1953.
He was a proud member of the Milledgeville Chapter of the American Legion. He was a long time member of Church of the Brethren in Milledgeville and Church of the Brethren in Freeport. He enjoyed many years running the Milledgeville Bowling Alley, running leagues and teaching young bowlers. For years he put his handyman skills to use with his company, D&D Construction. He enjoyed collecting coins and loved to fish. He loved to tinker with antique cars and tractors, and rebuilt a 1946 B. F. Avery Tractor. He and Sandy also loved to show his '51 Chevy and '48 Buick at car shows.
Don is survived by his wife, Sandra Saxby of Freeport; son, Robert D. "Rob" (Lois) Saxby of Raleigh, NC; two stepsons, Gary (Terri) Miller of Sterling, IL; Todd (Ashley) Miller of Monroe, WI; nine grandchildren; many great grandchildren; two brothers, William Saxby of Viola, WI and Eugene Paul (Libby) Saxby of San Diego, CA; along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cheryl Ann Johnson; one brother, John Saxby; and two sisters, Wilma Kilker and Esther Kuntzelman.
Visitation service will be 11:00am on Saturday, May 6, 2023 at Church of the Brethren, 777 W Pleasant Street, Freeport Il 61032, phone number is 815-232-1938. The Funeral Service will immediately follow at 12:00pm with the Rev. Christina Singh, officiating. Entombment will immediately follow the service at Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum, 2619 W. Pearl City Rd, Freeport. The family will greet guests with a luncheon at the Church of the Brethren following the entombment.
