DON EDWARD SIEGMUND

Don E. Siegmund, 88, of Freeport IL, passed away peacefully on December 18, 2023. Don was born on August 24, 1935 to parents William and Viola (Thiering) Siegmund in Wheatland Iowa. Don married Norma Jean Bope on June 10, 1956 and they had five children. A most loved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, whose family will miss him dearly.

Don retired as Principal for Lanark (Eastland) High School after a life-long career of teaching, coaching and administration. Don was a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ. He a was Mason, Shriner, Lions Club member and was part of the Illinois Principals Association and National Association of Secondary School Principals. He enjoyed attending sport activities with his kids and grandkids. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid boater, golfer, world traveler, sports fan and loved family gatherings – family was everything to Don. He was known for his resilience and tough determination in dealing with his chronic back pain for many years.

Don was predeceased by his parents Bill and Viola Siegmund, wife of 40 years, Jean Siegmund and one grandson Tyler Steger.

Don is survived by his second wife of almost 26 years Betty (DeKeyser) Siegmund, sons Mark (JoAnn) Siegmund of Muskego, WI, Brad (Shelley) Siegmund of Sterling, daughters Angie (Cory) Hoffman of Freeport, Carrie (Al) Steger of Monticello, IA and Paula (Troy) Ludwig of Monroe, WI; grandchildren Justin (Anna) Hoffman, Jenna (Craig) Hoesly, Kelsey Steger (Conner Nolan), Brady Siegmund, Drew Siegmund (Tess Mangan), Gabrielle (Beau) Holland, Kennedy Ludwig, Jen (Kyle) Spader, Dana (Mike) Buhl and Steve (Alicia) Marek; and twelve great grandchildren including one on the way.

His family wishes to extend a very special thanks to the dedicated staff at WinnPrairie in Freeport, also the Heartland Hospice team from Rockford for their extraordinary efforts to accommodate Don & Betty with all their loving care.

Cremation rites have been accorded. There will be no visitation services. A private family celebration of life will be held. A memorial has been established for WinnPrairie, 1545 S Forest Rd, Freeport, IL 61032, and Heartland Hospice, 6000 E. State St. 1st Floor, Rockford, IL 61108.
