Dennis H. Maves, DVM, 78, of Sarasota, Florida died Tuesday May 11, 2021 at Sarasota Hospice House after a year-long battle with lymphoma. He was born January 20, 1943 in Freeport, Illinois, the son of Harold and Alma (Rahn) Maves. Dennis and Sandra (Wessel) Maves were married August 28, 1965 in Freeport. He graduated from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 1968. He was the owner of Southland Veterinary Clinic in Freeport for 20 years. He also practiced part time in Sturgeon Bay, WI and Rockford, IL. He loved his beagles and rescued several. While living in Freeport, Dennis served on the board of directors for the Salvation Army and the Family YMCA of NW Illinois. He was an avid sports fan and diligent stamp collector. He is survived by his wife, Sandra, of Sarasota, his daughter Lisa Maves and her husband, Adam Szofran of Seattle, WA, his daughter, Laurie (Maves) and her husband Ralph Guglielmi, of Sarasota, three grandchildren, Forest and Mason Coon of Denver, CO, and Maddie Maves, of Seattle, and also cousin Phyllis Schriner of Freeport. His death is preceded by his parents and also his cousins, Stan Koehler and Anita Currier. Funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday May 19, 2021 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Visitation 11:00 a.m. until the time of service also at Burke Tubbs. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established for the Freeport Salvation Army and the Family YMCA of NW Illinois.
