Dennis D. Whalen, 72 of Freeport died Friday at F.H.N. Memorial Hospital. He was born October 15, 1943 in Freeport, the son of Kenneth L and Virginia M. (Harnish) Whalen. He and Catherine Marten were married by the late Bishop Arthur J. O'Neil on July 2, 1966 at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Freeport. Denny attended Dakota schools. He was employed as a Mold Maker for Micro Switch and retired after 39 years. Denny was a member of Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, and Eagle's Club 679. Denny enjoyed following the Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He also enjoyed fishing and golf and Snow birding in Orange Beach, Alabama, but above all, spending time with his family, friends and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Catherine of Freeport. Two sons; Tim (Tracie) Whalen of Holland, Michigan and Steve (Teresa) Whalen of Freeport. His brother, Frank (Yolanda Cross) Whalen of Freeport. His grandchildren; Jordan, Jessica, Ethan, Evan, Riley and Griffen. His brothers and sisters in law; Dick and Jean Ziebol, Tim and Mary St. Andrews, Larry and Debbie Stewart, Mike and Polly Marten, Ken and Theresa Marten, and Steve "Mort" and Sherie Marten. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Gerald and brother and sister in laws, Don and Fran Krum and Jim Marten. A funeral mass for Mr. Whalen will be Thursday, at 10:30 A.M. at Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Freeport. Visitation will be Wednesday, 4:00-7:00 P.M. at Bukre-Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport. Visitation will also be Thursday 9:30 A.M. until time of service at St. Thomas. Burial will be in Chapel hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial has been established in his name.
