Dean V. Simmer

In the words of Dean's voicemail recording: "Oh Shucks, sorry I missed you"… No Dean, we will miss you. Your smile, your laughter, your wit, and your sense of humor. After a long struggle with frontal temporal degeneration(FTD), Dean V. Simmer, 70, of Rock City, IL passed away on Saturday September 24, 2022 at Parkview Home in Freeport, IL. He was born August 27, 1952 in Freeport to Vernon and Hedy (Untersee) Simmer. Dean was born with a naturally sweet and kind soul, a heart of gold and a big smile for everyone he met. He could find humor in the most mundane life circumstances. He could bring a smile to your face and laugh along at you and with you. He had a great sense of humor and he had many stories to tell of his adventurous life that will live on through memories for years to come. After graduating from Dakota High School in 1970 he went on to study business and then launched his career in the insurance industry where he was part owner and operated Fruth Simmer Insurance. On October 11, 1974 Dean married Diane Lawson at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Durand, IL. He loved his wife, children and friends very much and enjoyed spending time with them all. Dean was a member of St. Patrick Church, Irish Grove, where he served as an usher. He was very involved with the community, especially the Dakota High School. Dean served on the Dakota School Board and was instrumental in the addition of new football field. His hobbies included fishing, golf and playing softball, where he was a pitcher for 20 years for Durand True Value. Family was very important to Dean and he enjoyed coaching his son's little league teams. Dean will always be remembered with great love by his wife Diane of Rock City, IL; three sons Ryan (Christy) Simmer of Rock City, IL, Travis (Bronwyn) of Plover, WI, and Eric (Emily) Simmer of Davis, IL; sister Nancy (Rod) Mortimer of Rock City, IL; and seven grandchildren Tyler, Hannah, Kelsey, Carver, Grant, Leo, and Olivia. Preceding Dean in death are his parents and brother David. Funeral mass will be held Thursday, September 29th at 10:30 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Davis, IL. A visitation will be held Wednesday, September 28th from 3-7pm also at the church. Cremation rites will be accorded. Burial will be in Irish Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established in Dean's memory.
