David C. Bast

April 1, 1948 — June 22, 2022

David C. Bast, 74, of Warrenville, IL, and formerly of Freeport, IL, passed away on Wednesday, June 22, 2022, with family at his side. David was born April 1, 1948, and was the first and only son of the late Bob and Betty (Palmer) Bast. David was a graduate of Freeport High School in 1966, as well as a graduate of George Williams College in 1971. David married Jean (Gisburne) Bast on December 19, 1970. David was extremely active in the YMCA, starting his career as a camp counselor at the Archibald YMCA Camp (Wisconsin), while also working at Camp Iroquois (Michigan) and Camp Crosby (Alabama). He continued work at the Bay City (Michigan) YMCA, Birmingham (Alabama) YMCA, and Heritage YMCA Group (Illinois), formerly the Naperville Area YMCA. The YMCA is also where David met Jean. David was always front and center when he entered a room and would talk with anyone there. He enjoyed taking family vacations to various destinations, one of which being Estrold Resort (Wisconsin) where he and Jean also honeymooned. He enjoyed going to Ann Arbor, Michigan, with his family to be "part of the largest crowd watching a football game anywhere in America" and root for the Maize and Blue, whilst also singing the state songs of Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan when crossing each state line. David was fond of his schnauzers later in life. David was a member of several organizations helping others, specifically noting the Lion's Club, Kiwanis, Y's Men's Club, and the Association of YMCA Retirees. He loved spending time with his family, hosting extended family over the holidays with the best stuffing recipe on the table, and having family around any other time. He adored the visits to the house by his grandson and watching him play with and nap on Grandma. David is preceded in death by his infant daughter Heather Marie; Brothers-in-Law David (Janet) Winter, Allen (Barbara) McAllister, & Edward T. Gisburne; Mother-in-law Margaret Gisburne & Father-in-law Edward H. Gisburne. David is survived by his wife Jean; sons Robert (Mandy), Bryan, & Justin; his grandson Camden; sisters Janet & Barbara; brothers-in-law Robert, James, and John; sisters-in-law Margaret and Patricia; niece Amy Winter (Greg) Sukolowsky, as well as other nieces and nephews; several cousins. A visitation will be held at Burke-Tubbs (504 N. Walnut Ave) in Freeport, Illinois, on Thursday, July 7th from 12:00-1:00 PM, followed immediately after by a memorial service.
