Darwin "Wink" Lance Winkelmann

Darwin "Wink" L. Winkelmann, 74, of Freeport, passed away, Monday March 15, 2021 at FHN Memorial Hospital. Darwin was born January 15, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Harvey and Beatrice (Bosmann) Winkelmann. He married Judith Dahl on March 23, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois. Darwin proudly served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. Darwin graduated from Evergreen Park Community High School in 1964. He earned his Associates Degree from Moraine Valley and his BA from Governors State University. Wink was a former southside Police Officer from 1971-1978. Once moving to Freeport, Darwin was employed at Newell, as a purchasing agent. Then he was employed at Malcolm Eaton for many years as a logistics manager. Wink was a life long Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed going to Laughlin, Nevada, gambling, playing cards, and enjoying get togethers with friends and family. Wink never missed an episode of MASH. Darwin is survived by his wife, Judith "Judi" Winkelmann of Freeport; son, Kurt (Liz) Winkelmann of Freeport; two granddaughters, Paige and Mia Winkelmann; sister, Sharon (Steve) Penington of Littleton, Colorado; and special niece and nephew, Kristin (Brad) Baldwin and Michael (Elise) Penington both of Colorado. Wink was preceded in death by his parents, close cousin, Lyle Goodbread; grandparents, and many aunts and uncles. Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday March 27, 2021 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home, Freeport. Visitation from noon until the time of service.
