Darwin D. Fulfer, 91, of Freeport and former resident of Lake Summerset and Champaign, Illinois died Monday at F.H.N. Memorial Hospital, Freeport. He was born September 16, 1921 in Champaign, Illinois, the son of Fred and Roszella (Hale) Fulfer. In high school he met Jeannette Alice Ascher; they were married in Hannibal, Mo. on April 15, 1940. Jeannette was the love of his life. She died on November 1, 1999. Mr. Fulfer was a World War II Army veteran. He served under General George Patton in the European Theatre as a mortar man in a half track truck. Darwin worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 42 years. He was promoted to Traveling Engineer and later became engineer for the famous City of New Orleans. He was a member of Bethany United Church of Christ, Freeport. He enjoyed C.B. radios and house boating. When he and Jeannette moved to Lake Summerset, he became Lake Security and taught boat safety classes with Jeannette. And both were officers in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. Mr. Fulfer is survived by his daughter, Jeanne (Richard) Fiene of Davis and his son, Darrell (Matrona Penny) Fulfer of Davis. His grandchildren; Tamera (Tom) Miller of Lanark, Suzanne (Steve) Dornink of Dakota, Kurt (Jamie) Fiene of Kenton, Ohio, Shane Fulfer of Milwaukee, Wis., Mahrya (David) Page of St. Louis, MO., and Athena Kara (Jon) Zannis of Crestview, FL. His great-grandchildren; Evan, Erik and Rachel Dornink, Zach Miller and Ashley (Josh) Parkinson, Michael, Kassi, Natalie, Caitlyn and Courtney Fiene, Tanya (John) Wise, Evander and Athena Page. His Great-Great- Grandchildren; Maya and Kadence Miller, Allysa, Payton, Josh, Nathanial, Grant and Hope Wise. Also nieces and a nephew. In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Harold and wife Nola, sister, Bess Reid; and her husband Rex. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Burke Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Rev Ted Michalsen will officiate. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
