Dale Emery Slifer

Dale Emery Slifer, 91, of Danville, Illinois died December 27, 2010 at home with family by his side. Dale was born December 8, 1919 in Belgrade, Nebraska to Rudolph and Effie (Carpenter) Slifer. Dale married Elsie Sindler of Eau Claire, Wisconsin in 1948. He married Marilyn Blair of Catlin, Illinois in 1963 and after 24 years divorced, they remarried in 2006. They survive. Also surviving; three sons, Edward D. (Jane) Slifer of Eau Claire, Wisc., Russell D. (Phyllis) Slifer of Boise, Idaho, and Joseph E. Slifer of Danville, Ill. Three daughters, Cindy J. Slifer of Madison, Wisc., Alice J. (Gary) Lantz of St.Marys, Ohio, and E. Marie Fisher of Rossvile, Ill. Seven grandchildren, one greatgrandchild, a sister'"in-law, Norma Slifer of Paris, Illinois, and many nieces and nephews. Dale was preceded in death by two brothers; Philllip Slifer and Virgil Slifer. Five sisters, Nellie Legler, Leda File, Phylis Phillips, Gladys Hammer, and Edith Parker. Dale was not one to bring attention to himself or his accomplishments, but in his absence we would like to do so. Dale was an honest, kind and considerate person, a good and loving father, and a loyal friend. Dale attended grade school in Belgrade, Neb. and high school in Osseo, Wis. He was in the Merchant Marines, a member of a crew that drove off Japanese planes that came in for a Torpedo kill in the Pacific. He was then drafted into the Army, 21st division, serving his time in Japan. After discharge, he spent 36 years in the food business. He owned and operated the Dog & Suds stores in Georgetown, Ill., Linton, Ind., Elwood, Ind., a Burger Chef in Owensboro, Kentucky and the Elbow Room Tavern in Eau Claire, Wis. He was a manager of the Kentucky Fried Chicken stores in Elgin, Carpentersville, and Freeport, Ill., the King Krispy in Freeport and a district manager for KELS, Inc. Northern Illinois District. Dale retired in 1984 in Freeport where he lived until moving to Danville in 2006. Dale was an avid fisherman and hunter making two big game hunts to Canada and Montana and deer hunting with family and friends yearly in Wisconsin. He was a big Green Bay Packers fan and enjoyed bowling, playing poker and gardening. Funeral services for Mr. Slifer will be held at 2:00 P.M Monday January 3, 2011 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport. Visitation will be from noon until the time of the service.
