Charles M. Roodhouse, 98 years old, died Sunday January 7, 2018 at Manor Court, Freeport. Charles was born June 10, 1919, in White Hall, Illinois, to parents Henry Benjamin and Avis (Moulton) Roodhouse. Charles was married for 36 years to Jeanette Walter whom he married in Carrolton, Illinois, in 1941. On May 5, 1979, Charles married Phyllis (Hettinger) Stocker in Freeport, Illinois, and remained so until Phyllis's death in 2015. Charles graduated from Blackburn College in Carlinville, Illinois, in 1940 and from the University of Illinois in 1942. During World War II, Charles trained GI's in engine removal and installation at Chanute Field. Charles was employed in the Soil Conservation Service from 1944 to 1952 working in the Bloomington, Illinois, area. Charles began a 30 year career in 1952 with the Blackhawk Farm Business Farm Management (FBFM) Service dealing with the farm records program. Charles was an executive field man serving in the Blackhawk region consisting of Stephenson, Jo Daviess, Carroll, Whiteside, Ogle and Winnebago Counties until he retired in 1982. After Charles retired, he continued to prepare taxes for many of his friends until 2008. Charles was a member of the Second Presbyterian Church which merged with the First Presbyterian, becoming the United Presbyterian Church of Freeport in 2009. Charles served as an elder, deacon, and treasurer. Charles enjoyed reading, bowling, fishing, camping, playing golf and playing cards. Charles bowled in the Senior Men's League and belonged to the Senior Men's Golf at Park Hill's Golf Course. Charles is survived by two daughters, Nancy Roodhouse of Rockford, Illinois, and Charlotte (Hugh) McMahon of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin; one son, Richard (Sandy) Roodhouse of Lake Summerset; three step-sons, Steven (Cory) Stocker of Burr Ridge, Illinois; Joel (Dawn) Stocker of Monroe, Wisconsin; and Mark (Jackie) Stocker of Freeport, Illinois. Charles is also survived by many grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Dorothy (Robert) Rimington, his brother, C. Bennett Roodhouse, and his wife, Phyllis Roodhouse. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday January 13, 2018 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home in Freeport, with Rev. Kathleen Luke officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service at Burke-Tubbs.
