Charles Johnson

Charles D. Johnson, 90, passed away on December 28, 2010 at Loyalton assisted living in Rockford. He was born March 5, 1920 in Freeport, to Harry D. and Kathryn (Hill) Johnson. He graduated from Freeport High School in 1938 and from the University of Iowa in 1942. He served as a radar mechanic in the 8th Air Force in England during WWII. After returning to the United States, he married Ora Geneva Miles in 1945. Charles was employed by Crum and Forster Insurance Company for 37 years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, bridge and watching most sports. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan. Charles was a member of United Presbyterian Church for more than 70 years, serving as a deacon, and elder, and trustee of the memorial fund. He taught Sunday School for more than 20 years. He was very active in the community as a member of the Amvets, the Freeport Golden K and a Volunteer with several service organizations. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, infant son, David, two brothers, Ted and Harry, and his sister Kathryn Brown. He is survived by his loving wife, Genny, two sons Roger (Cathy) of Rockford and Stephan (Emma) of Changzhou, China and three grandsons, Nathaniel, Seth and Joshua all of Rockford. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 15, 2011 at United Presbyterian Church Freeport at 11 a.m. with Pastor Kathy Luke officiating. Visitation will be Friday from 5-7 p.m. at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for United Presbyterian Church. Visit www.burketubbs.com
