Charles J. Ulrick

May 4, 1937 — August 27, 2024

Charles Joseph Ulrick Jr., 87, of Freeport, IL passed away Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at Ascension Living Saint Joseph Village in Freeport. He was born May 4, 1937, in Chicago, IL, the son of Charles and Ursula (DeClementi) Ulrick Sr. Charles was a 1959 graduate of the University of Illinois, earning his degree in Engineering & Physics. While at college he met the love of his life Lorraine Pohlers. On their first date they went bowling, and Lorraine dropped a bowling ball on Charles’ foot. Charles and Lorraine married on August 6, 1960, at First Lutheran Church in Joliet, IL. In their early years of marriage Charles’ career took them to various cities, but they eventually settled down in Afolkey, IL, living in a home that was once a school house built in 1861. They were members of Afolkey Grace United Methodist Church, where Charles taught Sunday School.

Charles could fix almost anything, but he had a real passion for grandfather clocks. He also could fix guitar amps among other electronics. He assisted many businesses through the years in fixing electronics, which included Radex, JC Penney and Guitar Center in Rockford, IL. He was all things carpentry, electric, and could even fix cars. Charles approached each project with a focus on reusing anything that had purpose, which helped keep a low budget on the projects.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine of Freeport, IL; two sons Steve (Elizabeth) Ulrick of Freeport, IL and David Ulrick of Belvidere, IL; and sister JoAnn Hutten of Joliet, IL, and nieces Patti (Lionel) Salinas of Channahon, IL, Michelle (Bill) Kreis of Joliet, IL, and nephew Mike Hutten of Rockdale, IL.
