Carol S. Campbell, 78, of Freeport, IL, passed away Monday May 15, 2023 at FHN Memorial Hospital with her family by her side. She was born February 26, 1945 in Wabash, IN the daughter of Earl and Mary (Van Meter) Cleaver. Carol married Stephen Campbell on August 10, 1963 in Wabash. Stephen passed away January 6, 2005. In 1964 Stephen and Carol moved to Freeport to operate the local A&W Root Beer. Through the years they also owned and operated the Third Street Station in Pecatonica, IL and for 27 years the Lena Drive Inn. Carol enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading, game shows, Elvis Pressley, working on her lawn and flowers, comedy, especially Jeff Foxworthy, and bowling. Family was very important to Carol and she loved to spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her two sons Michael (Monique) Campbell of Freeport, IL Jamie (Kelly) Campbell of Pearl City, IL; daughter Jody (Matt Wiest) of Freeport, IL; seven grandchildren Justin (Emily) Conroy of Hiawatha, KS, Devlyn (Lexie Bouvia) Campbell of Freeport, IL Katlyn Campbell of Freeport, IL and Skylar Campbell of Pearl City, IL, Kylie Campbell, Morgan Campbell, and Carson Campbell all of Pearl City, IL; and four great-grandchildren Chase Kradle, Aria Conroy, Kaislee Campbell, and Ky’arie Hayes.
Carol is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Mary Jean Simpson, and brother Earl Cleaver.
Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Friday May 19, 2023 at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. A visitation will be held from 11:00 A.M. until the time of service. Entombment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. A memorial has been established in Carol’s memory.
