Barnell Shorter

Barnell Shorter departed this earthly life on November 17, 2020. Barnell was born July 15, 1945 to Press and Annie Shorter in Mississippi. His family called him Bay-Ku. Barnell was employed by Gunite Foundry in Rockford, Il for 37 years; where he met many wonderful friends, who loved him dearly. Barnell gave his life to Christ at an early age. He moved to Freeport, IL in 1966 where he met and married Linda Lou Erving. In their union, one daughter was born. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Darnell Shorter. Barnell was a husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend to many. He was known as dad to many and will be truly missed. Barnell leaves to cherish his wife of 53 years Linda Lou Shorter; two sons Ralph (Teresa) Alvoid and Carlos Erving, and daughter Charita (Richard) Alexander. Barnell has twelve grandchildren; Shantell Smith, Devin Gossett, Chakiya Gossett, Ondrea Alvoid, Marquis Chatman, Cody Farr, Tyree Shorter, Tiara Farr, Tiona Farr, Quintis Alvoid, Tymarius Alexander, and Keonte Barnell Alexander. His grandsons Tyree and Tymarius cared for him and his wife during his final years. Barnell had 23 great-grandchildren. He cherished every moment he got to spend with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Barnell also leaves four brothers: Charles (Delois) Shorter, Sylvester Shorter, Lester (Arlene) Shorter, and Orlando (Joyce) Shorter; six sisters: Katherine Prince, Shirley (William) Jordan, Ruth Shorter, Linda (Willie D) Williams, Gloria (Charles) Cain, and Anita (David Lee) Williams. Barnell also leaves behind two special nephews, Gary Shorter and Sylvester "Silk" Shorter; and brother-in-law Garland Pruitt.
