Audrey E Werntz

Audrey E. Werntz, 89, of Freeport, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014, at Liberty Village in Freeport. She was born on February 11, 1925, in Mt. Pulaski, IL., the daughter of George and Florence (Downing) Meister. Audrey married Lester Werntz on June 14, 1944, in Mt. Pulaski, IL. Lester died on April 15, 2004. Mrs. Werntz was employed by the U.S. Government during and following WWII, as a medical secretary in Army Hospitals and as a secretary for the IRS. At the University of Illinois she was secretary to the Dean of Graduate College. After raising her family she worked as a tax preparer for Freeport attorneys. Audrey loved playing golf - she had six holes-in-one in Illinois and Arizona. She was a member of Park Hills Ladies Golf League since 1968. She also enjoyed family activities, playing bridge, cooking and baking for family, was an avid reader and a supporter of Kids, Coats and Clothes in Freeport, and the Freeport Public Library. Survivors include two sons; Robert (Joyce) and Donald (Linda) Werntz of Freeport; five grandchildren; Ryan, Adam, Craig, Chad and Rob; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister Maxine and brother Loren. At Audrey's request there will be no visitation or service. A memorial has been established in her memory.
